Dear Southern Danceworks Supporter:

Southern Danceworks is proud of its history as Alabama’s professional modern dance company. A vital part of the community since 1963, the mission of Southern Danceworks is to advance dance as a major art form, contributing to and enriching the life, culture, and community of Alabama. Southern Danceworks offers a wide variety of acclaimed programs with "an overarching commitment to quality at the highest level" (The Birmingham News). Artistic Director Teri Weksler pursues a bold vision for the company:

  • To bring new audiences to modern dance through the unity of dance and live music
  • To commission new work by guest choreographers
  • To collaborate with a variety of artists and arts organizations
  • To develop partnerships for educational outreach programs
  • To nurture young choreographers
After a brief "sabbatical" from our normal production schedule, Artistic Director Teri Weksler and Managing Director Rosemary Johnson are busy planning new and exciting things for the company. Here are some of the latest developments!

  • A new partnership venture for Southern Danceworks is a joint concert with Chicago-based The Dance COLEctive on Saturday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 30 at 2:30 p.m. Performances are at Samford University’s Harrison Theatre. Margi Cole, an Alabama native and Alabama School of Fine Arts graduate, is the Artistic Director of the Dance COLEctive. Her company will perform Written on the Body, Margi’s latest work using the lives of the literary 19th-century Brontë sisters as a point of departure in its exploration of gender roles and stereotypes. Southern Danceworks will perform favorites such as excerpts from Robert Battle’s Battlefield and work by SDW’s newest young choreographer, JaMorris Rivers.
  • Southern Danceworks was recently awarded grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the Southern Arts Federation, and the Daniel Foundation of Alabama for our upcoming performance with The Dance COLEctive, and future projects that are in the development stage.
  • Southern Danceworks is now an active member of DanceUSA, the national service organization for professional dance. SDW received a scholarship to attend the workshop Dual Leadership: Partnering from the Inside Out developed by DanceUSA in collaboration with Theater Communications Group and the Institute for Cultural Policy and Practice at Virginia Tech. Created specifically for two-person artistic/management leadership teams, this program encourages participants to build a common understanding of the unique challenges involved in developing sustainable and effective dual leadership structures.
